Blanket stitch can be used for decoration or to edge a piece of work or applique piece.

To begin, bring your needle up through the fabric from the reverse side to the front where you want the line of blanket stitch to start.  Pull the thread through, leaving a tail to fasten in at the back as you work (see 'getting started' page).

Push your needle into the front side of the fabric a little further along the line and bring it back up through the fabric from the reverse side to the front again adjacent to your line, as shown in the picture below.  Wrap your thread around behind the needle.  Pull the needle all the way through the fabric and draw the thread right through.

Repeat the action above, moving further up the line, as shown below.

  

Continue along the line until you have sewn the length of blanket stitch that you want. 

To finish the line, push your needle in through the fabric from front to back just the other side of the thread that forms the corner of the last stitch, as shown in the picture below.

Try to keep your stitches at an equal height and distance from each other to keep the work neat and even.
